An investigation into the use of cardiolipin antigens. III. Choice of a formula for cardiolipin Wassermann antigen for use in the Whitechapel Wassermann technique.

چکیده

The choice of a formula for the antigen is limited by four considerations: (1) The anticomplementary action of the antigen. (2) The complement-fixing properties of the antigen. (3) The occurrence of floccules when the antigen is made in saline suspensions. (4) The unit strength of the formula to be employed. It has already been shown (Price, 1953a, b) that as far as the anticomplementary properties of the antigen are concerned, the ideal formula is cardiolipin 1, lecithin 1, cholesterol 10, the unit strength of the reagents being 0-05 per cent. (Table VI, page 17). With regard to the complement-fixing properties of the antigen, the most sensitive antigen was found to be one in which the proportion of the reagents is cardiolipin 1, lecithin 1, cholesterol 10-6, (Tables X, XIII, and XV, pp. 79, 81, and 82).

A Note on the Specificity of Cardiolipin and Standard Antigens in Testing Sera

Comparative serum testing by the Wassermann reaction using cardiolipin and standard antigens was reported by Price and Wilkinson (1950). Test results on 5,124 sera were reviewed and it was concluded that cardiolipin antigen was appreciably more sensitive than the standard antigen (Harrison and Wyler technique), as it detected a higher proportion of cases of early primary syphilis and also remai...

Further assessment of cardiolipin antigen by parallel testing against standard antigen in routine Wassermann reactions.

In a previous communication (Shaw, 1955), I referred to several papers concerning the value of cardiolipin antigen in complement-fixation and flocculation tests. The majority of workers have reported increased sensitivity and specificity with this antigen, which has also been recommended to obtain reproducible results in various laboratories in different countries. At that time, I compared the ...

An investigation into the use of cardiolipin antigens. II. Complement-fixing properties of cardiolipin Wassermann antigen.

Complement-Fixing Properties of Cardiolipin This reagent was examined using two ranges of 0-6 per cent. to 0 0045 per cent. One range was suspended in saline at a dilution of 1 in 50 and the other at 1 in 200. No fixation of complement was obtained when using syphilitic sera. Mixtures of cardiolipin and lecithin were next tested for their complement-fixing ability in the presence of a suitable ...

Evaluation of cardiolipin antigen in routine Wassermann reactions.

Cardiolipin is a phospholipid and was isolated by Pangborn (1941, 1942) while investigating the nature of the antigenic material in beef heart muscle used in the Wassermann reaction. It was shown that cardiolipin was serologically active when used together with lecithin, and that the sensitivity of the reaction was enhanced by the addition of cholesterol. A monograph on cardiolipin antigen was ...

Studies on the effect of variation of concentration and origin of lecithin (natural and synthetic) in cardiolipin complement-fixation antigen.

The significance of the relationship between the three components of cardiolipin complementfixation antigen, viz. cardiolipin, natural lecithin, and cholesterol, was first studied by Maltaner and Maltaner (1945) in experiments with syphilitic pooled rabbit or human sera. Suitable sensitivity with regard to the routine sero-diagnosis of syphilis was obtained with the antigen formula: Cardiolipin...
